According to the discography for K.C. Dey songs compiled by Sushanta Kumar Chatterjee, Calcutta & Michael Kinnear, Melbourne, this song from film 'Maya' (1936) was recorded by the 'Blind Singer' and issued on HMV P. 11813 during Feb 1937. K.C. Dey had acted in the film and it is possible that the song was picturised on him. In view of the above, it is reasonable to assume that this is a Pankaj Mullick 'Version' of the original K.C. Dey song. Other instances of Pankaj Mullick recording 'Version' songs of original K.L. Saigal songs include (1) film My Sister (1944) songs 'Ai Kaatib-e-Taqdeer', 'Chhupo Na, Chhupo Na, Chhupo Na' & 'Do Nainaa Matavaare Tihaare' as well as Bengali film Parichoy(1941) songs 'Tomaar Binaaye Gaan Chhilo' and 'Aamaar Raat Pohaalo Shaarad Praate'.
Given the proximity of the matrix numbers of the New Theatres Record (NTR) discs issued for this Pankaj Mullick song (H. 11458) and K.L. Saigal song 'Prem Ka Hai Is Jag Mein Panth Nirala' (H. 11488) from Hindi film President (1937), it sounds reasonable to assume that this song was indeed issued during 1937.]

[Though the film 'Talkie of Talkies' (released on 14/1/37) had one song by Tagore - "Ke Roy Bhuley Tomar Mohan Rupey",
the credit of taking Tagore’s songs and music, which have come to be known as 'Rabindra Sangeet', to the masses goes to 'Mukti'.
The unprecedented popularity of Kanan Devi & Pankaj Mullick songs in 'Mukti' played a major role in creating a mass appeal for this kind of songs which were hitherto unknown. It was the first film to use the name 'Kanan Devi'. Earlier, she was known as Kanan Bala. Perhaps, this was the only film for which Kanan Devi songs were composed by PM.

Rabindranath Tagore not only penned the lyrics for close to 2000 songs but also set them to music. This is one of the rare Rabindra Sangeet / Tagore songs which was composed not by the Poet but by Pankaj Mullick.
Quote: "The debate about improvisation versus keeping to the fixed scores in music had gripped Tagore for several years. He tried to confront his own contradictions in advocating artistic freedom while seeking to protect his own songs from creative interpretations by others ... Tagore's worry was that to achieve this balance (between the foundational structure of melody and variations of musical flourish), talent was required and his songs, as he often heard being sung, disappointed him for failing to capture his principal message.
Nevertheless, Tagore retained till the end a generosity in acknowledging and appreciating real talent. Pankaj Kumar Mullick narrated how he had been sent for by the Poet on learning that he had set one of Tagore's poems to his own music, which he had been singing publicly. Pankaj sang his version to the Poet who he noted, fell silent with his eyes closed. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valour Pankaj left quickly without waiting to hear Tagore's comments. Later in 1937 when Pankaj contemplated using the song in a playback for a Bengali film to be directed by P.C. Barua under the New Theatre's banner, he approached Tagore for permission. He was delighted to learn that Rabindranath had not only enjoyed his song rendition but had been disappointed at the abrupt departure of Pankaj. Approving of the song whole-heartedly, Tagore even changed a word or two to improve the song. Showing interest in the storyline of the film, he suggested the title 'Mukti' or Freedom for it. Further he suggested two more of his songs for inclusion in the film, extracting a promise from Pankaj that he would teach the noted film artiste Kanan Debi these songs for the film." - Reba Som, 'Rabindranath Tagore: The Singer and His Song' (first published in Viking by Penguin Books India 2009.]

Dey, Uma Shashi & K.L. Saigal, in their respective voices (as a pre-recorded play-back song), as was the prevailing practice then. However, Pankaj Mullick replaced K.C. A new technique of audio 'mixing' was used during recording of these songs by Pankaj Mullick who composed music for both the films. Fade-in and fade-outs were used to mark the transition of the rendering from one singer to the other.]

[Film Yatrik and its Bengali version Mahaprasthaner Pathe (1952) are based on 'Mahaprasthaner Pathe' written by Subodh Kumar Sanyal. Several songs from Yatrik were reportedly issued on LP record. ELCP 3428 apparently included songs from the Bengali film Raikamal (1955) on one side & Yatrik songs on the other side. While the record label and jacket also included the name of the Bengali version of the film - Mahaprasthaner Pathe and other related details, in Bengali language, the record actually played out 'Hindi' songs (from the Hindi film Yatrik ?).
One possibility is that some of the songs included in the LP were actually sound track versions used in the Bengali version of the film i.e., 'Mahaprasthaner Pathey' as well and hence there was no contradiction in terms of the facts stated. Availability of the film 'Mahaprasthaner Pathey' or its video recording can help resolve the inconsistencies. However, at present, this is not the case.
The documentation for Pankaj Mullick's 'Mahaprasthaner Pathey' songs will therefore continue to be tentative, due to inadequate availability of discography details as well as audio recordings from the same.]

[Film Yatrik and its Bengali version Mahaprasthaner Pathe (1952) are based on 'Mahaprasthaner Pathe' written by Subodh Kumar Sanyal. Several songs from Yatrik were reportedly issued on LP record. ELCP 3428 apparently included songs from the Bengali film Raikamal (1955) on one side & Yatrik songs on the other side. While the record label and jacket also included the name of the Bengali version of the film Mahaprasthaner Pathe and other related details, in Bengali language, the record actually played out 'Hindi' songs (from the Hindi film Yatrik ?).
One possibility is that some of the songs included in the LP were actually sound track versions used in the Bengali version of the film i.e., 'Mahaprasthaner Pathey' as well and hence there was no contradiction in terms of the facts stated. Availability of the film 'Mahaprasthaner Pathey' or its video recording can help resolve the inconsistencies. However, at present, this is not the case.]

[Note: The chorus song 'Shiva Strotram - Hey Chandrachhud Madanantak' from Hindi film Nartaki (1940) and a variant of the same (He Biswanath Shibshankar), used in Bengali Film Nartaki (1940) is based on a Sanskrit composition penned by Shankaracharya a.k.a Adi Shankara. This song was once again rendered (by a chorus including Pankaj Mullick) for film 'yatrik' (1952) as well as its Bengali version 'Mahaprasthaner Pathe' made in 1952 under the music direction of pankaj mullick.
It is not certain if the audio file for this song is from the Bengali film 'Mahaprasthaner Pathey' or its Hindi version 'Yatrik'. The same recording or a new recording of the same song appears to have been issued under different matrix numbers (refer to the labels posted alongside) for the song from the Hindi & Bengali versions of the film.
